COMPARATIVE REVIEW
OF TWO BLACK MOONPHASE SPEEDMASTERS

The first model (ref. ST 345.0809), which was delivered between November 1985 and December 1988, was neither numbered nor officially limited. Nevertheless its low production estimated at 1’300 examples, makes it particularly desired by collectors who have named it Speedymoon.

The complication entailed a modification of the caliber 861, which became the caliber 866.

The Speedymoon’s main differences from other moonphase models are its dial with tritium hour markers and a painted moon that comes in three versions: small, big, and with a face. Furthermore it is the only one with a dial that has all the date numbers with their feet towards the center.

The matching steel bracelets are 1447/805 at the start of production, followed by the 1450/808, both being much sought-after.

SPEEDYMOON
(1985-1988)

The Speedymoon was fitted with three different moon disks: a small moon and five- and six-pointed stars (left), a big moon with five-pointed stars only (center) and a big moon with a stylized face (right).

Furthermore it is the only one with a dial that has all the date numbers with their feet towards the center.

A new moonphase version of the Speedmaster with a black dial has been presented in 2003 (PIC 3576.50).

It retains the main visual aspects of the Speedymoon version, but OMEGA added some new features. Its luminova dial differs from the conventional dials in having circled subdials. Its caliber 1866 movement with a luxury finish is a modification of the caliber 1863. The display back is the same as that on The First and Only model (PIC 3573.50).

The production of this reference has been stopped in 2017.

Note that this dial (as all the other moonphase dials except the Speedymoon original one) has all the date numbers with their feet towards the bottom.
